What to Expect Your First Time with Dr. Kelli Nelson

If you've never been to a chiropractor before, it's normal to feel a little unsure about what to expect. Here's a straightforward look at what happens when you come in for the first time.

Before you arrive

You'll fill out some intake paperwork that covers your health history, current concerns, and goals. The more specific you can be, the better. Don't just note where it hurts. Think about when it started, what makes it better or worse, and what you've already tried. That context helps me understand the full picture from the start.

Your first visit

The first appointment is longer than follow-up visits because we spend time talking. I want to hear what's been going on in your own words before I start assessing anything. A thorough history often tells me more than any test.

From there, I'll do a physical assessment that looks at your posture, movement, and how your joints and tissues are functioning. Depending on what we find, I may also do some orthopedic or neurological testing.

At the end of the visit, I'll share what I found and what I think is driving the issue. I'll explain things in plain language, not jargon, so you actually understand what's happening in your body. We'll talk through what a care plan might look like and what you can reasonably expect.

Will I be adjusted on the first visit?

Sometimes, yes. It depends on what we find and what feels appropriate. I never adjust someone without explaining what I'm doing and why. If you're nervous about adjustments, tell me. There are many ways to work with the spine and joints, and we can find an approach that feels right for you.

What to wear

Comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely is ideal. Athletic wear or anything you'd wear to a yoga class works well.

After your first visit

It's common to feel some mild soreness after an initial visit, especially if your body hasn't been worked on before. This typically passes within a day or two. Some people feel immediate relief. Most people notice gradual improvement over the course of a few visits.

I'll give you clear guidance on what to do between visits, whether that's specific stretches, movement habits, or things to pay attention to. The work we do together is most effective when you understand what's happening and can participate in your own recovery.

If you have questions before you come in, don't hesitate to reach out. I'm happy to answer them.
